Her Shower Cap Description

A shower cap is a hat worn when showering or bathing in order to prevent hair from becoming wet.

In other words, a shower cap is a covering worn over the head to ensure water does not come into contact with hair while showering/bathing or engaging in other activity/activities involving contact with water (Black, 2021).

People choose to wear Her Shower Cap from Canagoza when bathing shortly prior to retiring to bed. During this time, a person can prefer not to take time to dry their hair.

A person may choose to wear a shower cap as they do not like to wash their hair daily for some reasons. One reason is that washing hair strips it of natural oils. These oils play the role of maintaining hair soft and smooth. A second reason is that it takes a long time to dry and style hair after washing. Her Shower Cap is thus your weapon to assist you in maintaining your hairstyle.

With high level of waterproofing, you can be sure your hair shall be in good condition the minute you step out. With Her Shower Cap’s comfortable fit, you can continue with your beauty routine, as your hair will remain put. One such routine is washing your face. Another routine is adding a face mask.

Some people prefer to wear Her Shower Cap outdoors to protect their hair from rain/mist/fog. A shower cap blocks moisture from messing up your hairstyle. Usually, the moisture causes frizz. The shower cap thus ensures all that time and effort you employed to style the hair is not wasted (Black, 2021; “5 reasons why you need a shower cap,” 2020; Mendez, 2021).

A shower cap is important during deep conditioning and hair dyeing. Deep conditioning is a process of coating hair with nourishing products. To obtain every benefit of a deep conditioner, it is best to perform some activities in series. One is to shampoo hair. A second is applying a deep conditioner. A third activity is twisting back. Lastly, put on your Her Shower Cap.

Covering your hair in Her Shower Cap enables heat from your head to create the perfect enclosed environment for the deep conditioner to penetrate the cuticle (“5 reasons why you need a shower cap,” 2020).

In addition, sleeping with a shower cap may result to softer hair, as the shower cap assists you to maximize the benefits of a deep conditioner, and ensuring efficiency of hair dyeing. You will prevent the deep conditioner/dye from migrating to your beddings (bed sheets, duvets…) (Loo Academy, 2021).

A shower cap can assist with at-home dry scalp treatment/s. The first step to dealing with a dry scalp situation is changing your shampoo, especially harsh shampoos. In case your scalp is feeling rigid and dry, be cautious of nasty chemicals capable of stripping you of moisture. One such is sulfates. Rather, choose gentler, more hydrating shampoo or hair hydrating products (“6 pro tips to deal with dry scalp,” 2021).

Please see Appendix 1 for more information about shampooing.

The second step to dealing with a dry scalp situation is to apply a mild moisturizer to your scalp (U.S. Dermatology Partners, 2019). An example of the moisturizer is virgin coconut oil (Varma et al., 2019). A second example is vitamin E oil (“Vitamin E oil: 10 powerful benefits for skin” 2020). Next, put a dry shower cap over your hair to ensure the moisturizer is in place as you sleep.

The moisturizer replenishes/increases hair moisture level. If you experience severe dryness, you might desire to avoid shampooing. Skip it and just perform conditioning. Generally, people struggling with dry scalp should aim to shampoo a few times weekly (U.S. Dermatology Partners, 2019).

People with very dry hair do not require washing their hair daily. Washing the hair less frequently will aid to safeguard the natural oils in the scalp as well as maintain hair well moisturized (Villines, 2020).

In case the dry scalp problem persists, please visit a dermatologist. The objective of the visit is to develop a more advanced treatment plan (U.S. Dermatology Partners, 2019).

A shower cap is important when applying at-home dandruff treatments/treating psoriasis. Apply the product for treating dandruff/psoriasis. Wear a dry shower cap before you slip into bed. Doing so will maintain the hair damp and hold medicine in. It might make your head sweat as you sleep. More moisture is thus added (Fields, 2021). Please see Appendix 2 for more information about at-home dandruff treatments.

Last but not least, nowadays, shower caps are not only functional, they are also stylish. They are available in a mix of vibrant colors, prints, as well as textures. Some have ribbons. Some have leopard or amoeba spots for a fashion-forward touch. Some are oversized. Thus, they can fit people with large volume of hair or largely styled hair (Black, 2021).

Properties of Engineering Materials used to Manufacture Her Shower Cap

The engineering materials used in Her Shower Caps block steam and moisture from entering. The outer part is made from polyester/polyester satin/nylon. The inside is lined with ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA). Ethylene vinyl acetate is also abbreviated as PEVA, which stands for polyethylene vinyl acetate. EVA is a reputable/safer substitute for polyvinyl chloride (PVC). That is because EVA is chlorine-free, unlike PVC.

EVA is also BPA-free (BPA stands for bisphenol A). EVA dries quickly, which prevents bacteria, mold, and mildew growth or activity. EVA is hand and machine washable.

Her Shower Cap has a firm elastic band. Moreover, it has a roomy interior.

Her Shower Cap is reusable, and it is also ideal for home and travel (Davis & Penrose, 2021; SlipX Solutions, 2021).

PVC Potential Health Effects

1. Carcinogenic, meaning it has capability to cause cancer in human beings

2. Birth defects

3. Impaired child development

4. Neurotoxicity (brain damage/its function)

5. Reproductive impairment

6. Immune system suppression

7. Endocrine system disruption (Healthy Building Science, 2013).

Pairing a Shower Cap with a Headband

An expert (stylist) named Ferrara offers a view of situating a stretchy headband over your hairline before securing your shower cap over the headband. That can be done before showering. After showering, dry the cap first. Or, wrap your head loosely in a La Donna Hair Drying Towel, Turban, or Wrap from Canagoza with the Her Shower Cap on. Doing so will ensure the shower cap is dry (Baker, 2021).

The covering by shower cap must stay on if the bathroom is steamy (a warm/hot shower usually generates steam). If the covering is not on, the steam/moisture shall impact your hair similar to regular water (Baker, 2021).

Shower Cap: Points to Note

The act of covering your hair with a shower cap daily while sleeping is not recommended. Sleeping with a shower cap on daily leads to trapping in more heat and moisture. The trapping can cause too much natural buildup of sebum and sweat on your scalp. The natural buildup can cause dandruff.

An alternative to a shower cap in case you have not applied medicine/applied deep conditioner/shampooed your hair is Her Hair Bonnet from Canagoza (Loo Academy, 2021).

There could be residues from products you use on your hair, especially overnight. Such products include conditioners, oils, shampoos, softeners, creams, and gels. Those residues can accumulate on your scalp and then cause dandruff in case those products are not washed comprehensively after every use. You thus need to wash your hair comprehensively (Loo Academy, 2021).

In addition, an itchy, dry, and flaky scalp might be telling you to rinse the products from your hair. Leaving some products on your scalp might irritate it. In case you have an itchy scalp and a rash, you might have a condition known as allergic contact dermatitis.

Allergic contact dermatitis is common among persons who dye their hair. Frequently, the cause is an ingredient in dye known as para-phenylenediamine (PPD). The ingredient is frequently found in black hair dyes (American Academy of Dermatology Association, 2021).
Some people who sleep with a shower cap may report experiencing itchy scalp. The itchiness could be due to a reaction to the products (such as conditioners and shampoos that could be too harsh) you are using while wearing a shower cap (Genesis Career College, 2021).

In fact, you might have an allergy to the various products that touches your scalp. If that is the situation, you will probably have an itchy rash on your scalp and any other skin the product/s touches (American Academy of Dermatology Association, 2021).

If itchiness does not end, apparently, it might be a sign to regulate the frequency of your use of the products. Or, you should switch to more natural hair products. Or, please consult your doctor (Loo Academy, 2021).

Cleaning/Caring of Her Shower Cap

Aim to wash your shower cap regularly. Shower caps can collect unpleasant odors over time. Dirt and oil from your hair might contribute to a smelly shower cap. After each shower, hang up your shower cap to dry.

Hand-washing

For hand-washing, use a gentle soap and cool water or warm water (should not exceed 30 degrees Celsius). Please do not dry in a machine (dryer). Hang dry only (hang only on a clothesline to dry) (Patel et al., 2018).

Alternatively, you can wash your shower cap using both white vinegar and mild (gentle) liquid soap or mild (gentle) detergent.

         The procedure is:

Step 1

Add sufficient white vinegar in a clean basin or sink to cover your shower cap.

Step 2

Place the shower cap into the vinegar. Push the shower cap down to ensure it is fully covered by the white vinegar. Allow the shower cap to remain in the vinegar for 15 to 20 minutes.

Step 3

Remove the cap from the white vinegar. Place some water in a basin. Add a drop or two of mild (gentle) liquid soap or apply mild (gentle) detergent.

Step 4

Place the cap in the water and rub the cap together to remove any remaining residue.

Step 5

Rinse the shower cap well. Hang it to dry in a well-ventilated area. Again, do not dry it using a machine (dryer) (Johnson, n.d.).

Machine Washing

For machine washing, turn the shower cap inside out. Wash on gentle cycle in cool water with mild (gentle) detergent. Again, do not dry in a machine (dryer). Hang dry only (hang only on a clothesline to dry) (Baker, 2021).

Appendix 1: Shampooing

Experts indicate only a small group of people should shampoo daily. If you shampoo often, you might dry your hair out. You will thus leave it vulnerable to breakage, according to a dermatologist, Dr. Angela Lamb (MD).

Dr. Lamb is an assistant professor of dermatology at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, New York City (Birch, 2021).

Dr. Lamb says hair generates natural oil known as sebum. Shampoo is an emulsifier, Lamb notes. It captures and traps excess oil, dirt, and product residue/s that you consequently rinse out to clean your hair (Birch, 2021).

One category of persons who should shampoo daily is persons having very fine hair. Frequently, fine hair means oily hair. Please, therefore, avoid creamy shampoos. Use gentle shampoos. These shampoos are marked for volume and every day or frequent washing.

The shampoos for oily hair must be clear. The shampoos must also not be thick and creamy (Birch, 2021; Derrick, 2021; Villines, 2020).

A second category of persons who should shampoo daily is persons who exercises greatly (and sweats).

A third category is people who live in humid areas.

In case you have oily scalp, you should wash your hair daily. An oily scalp may result to uncomfortable itching and dandruff (Villines, 2020).

Appendix 2: At-Home Dandruff Treatments

Many times, dandruff is caused by too much oil on the scalp. Thus, you must aim to regularly wash your hair with a gentle shampoo. Doing that might be sufficient to correct the problem.

You should also avoid using any styling products that could be increasing oil or irritating your scalp. If your frequent washing and changes to your hair care products and routine does not work, you might want to utilize an anti-dandruff shampoo.

The ingredients in every category of dandruff shampoo are meant to address particular underlying causes of dandruff. You should, therefore, take care to look for a shampoo having the best ingredients for your situation.

Some common anti-dandruff shampoo ingredients are:

1. Salicylic acid: Removes scales on the skin before they flake. Salicylic acid also prevents surplus oil from building up on the scalp.

2. Coal tar: Reduces the development of new skin cells.

3. Pyrithione zinc: Gentle sufficiently for every day use to prevent dandruff. Moreover, it is efficient in treating dandruff that is caused by a fungal infection.

4. Selenium sulfide: Prevents skin cells from dying off at a quick rate. Moreover, it slows down cell regrowth.

5. Ketoconazole: Particularly formulated to destroy surplus fungal growth on the scalp (U.S. Dermatology Partners, 2019).

There might be individuals suffering from psoriasis. Such persons should wash their hair every time they shower/bathe. They might aim to try a shampoo that is meant for them (persons with psoriasis). Ordinarily, such shampoos contain tar, salicylic acid, or ketoconazole.

Your doctor may also prescribe specific dandruff shampoos, creams, or scale softeners (Fields, 2021).
